what the all the controversy about different kinds of links are about? Aren't all links pretty much the same, just a way for someone on the web to get from one site to another?

Welcome new,
You are correct:
just a way for someone on the web to get from one site to another?
A link is in the most 'basic form' is a hyperlink from one page on the internet to another page on the internet.
The controversy is really about what sites to link to and what sites to not link to. Not all links are treated the same by the search engines. There are two basic kinds of links:
Relevant Link - If your site is about birds and their site is about birds.
This is the best kind of link
Irrelevant Link - If your site is about birds and their site is about hotels.
This is not a good link because it doesn't benefit your user
There is a lot more information about this subject available here:

I appreciate the comments, but the difference between relevant and irrelevant links isn't what's troubling me.
What I'm confused about is the numbers game, one-way links, two-way links, three-way links, multiple links ...
If I request a link from someone on this site and they respond and "sure, that would be great, you put a link to my site on your site and I'll do the reverse" that's obviously (I think) a two-way link.
Is there any advantage to trying to set up the other kinds?

Thanks for the tips. I do have one more question, is there any advantage to putting all your links on a dedicated link page (or pages) as opposed to scattering them about your site in appropriate locations?

The thing you must look at is that it's not just the website that has a page rank each page in a website has a page ranking score which can vary a heap, so the whole site may be ranked at say seven but some of the internal pages may be higher or lower.
So scattering the links around within a website may make a difference to the sites scores.
We use a content based algo and so our scores for a website don't depend on links in or out of a website. We rate a site on it's content and word meanings and relationships which is nothing like some other search engines use.

John,
Both LinkPartners and LinksManager are designed to help you find {in LinkPartner's case} and manage {in LinksManager's case} reciprocal linking partners.
The "backlink" is the other site linking back to your site. We do not help generate backlinks for a webmaster as that would be considered somewhat like automated linking.
Additionally we cannot force another site to link back to one of our users sites. If your site is popular and useful to people you will get backlinks as other sites will link to your site to provide helpful information and resources to their visitors. Whether a site links back to your site can and should depend on many things.
Is your site relevant to the other site? Is your site useful to their visitors? Is your site clean and easy to navigate? Is your site updated with new content on a regular basis? Is your site SEO optimized? Is your site new to the Internet or an established seasoned website?
To generate more back links you want to exchange links with other relevant sites. Posting in forums will help you generate more backlinks; however, multiple postings in the same forum may only count as one backlink. This means you will want to be active in many "relevant" forums. You can also write articles for industry related sites. Many times the other site will allow you an author credit and a link to a relevant page on your site. You can use blogs and post blogs at other sites to gain more exposure as an expert in your field.
All of these things will help you get more backlinks. There is no miracle program that will help you get backlinks. A successful link swap campaign takes much time, patience and effort.
Hopefully that helps to answer your question and addresses your concerns.

It is a good topic here.
Anyway links are different from one another, such as plain links differ much from keywords links. SEs are treating them as different links and will bring different confidence to themselfs.
Link position is also another key to the difference.
In a word, no same links at all

Getting a lot of links is one thing, but the quality of those links determines how much benefit those links will be to you. If you get a bunch of links from PR0 or PR1 sites, then you might not get much value, especially if the page on which your link appears has many other links on it as well.
The reason for this is Google assigns a total link value to a site based on its PageRank. Whenever that site links out to another site, Google assigns some of that site's overall link value to that link. The higher the PR for a site, and the fewer outbound links on that site, the more value the link to your site will have. This information was disclosed by Google in its patent filings and is still considered relevant today.
Therefore, don't just focus on getting lots of links. Focus on getting lots of high PR links. Of course low PR links won't hurt you, and may even bring some direct traffic to your site. But if you want to see big jumps in where your site ranks in search engines, then focus on getting high PR links. In fact, one link from a PR4 site to yours can have as much, or more, value than 100 PR1 links to your site.
Good luck linking!

Linking to sites in bad neighborhoods is always a bad idea; make a habit of checking who your link sites link to.
Also, don't just add links because you can, add reciprocal links from sites that fit within your niche.
