I would like to get some feedback on managing/starting a linking campaign,
Is it neccesary to use a software program?... if so any suggestions as to which software to use?

Unless you want to spend all your time hard-coding and checking up on reciprocating links, then YES, go with a management program.
I use LinksManager.com, and it's the best I've used or tested. It's web based, so I can manage my links from anywhere, it's easy to use and understand, it has lots of features, and the support has been top-notch.

Being a dentist, I don't have a whole lot of links so my reason for using Linksmanager is basically defensive. I hate clicking on a link somewhere and getting a 404 or other dead link message. It makes me question the credibility of everything else on that website.
Since I believe a lot of people are like me in that respect, Linksmanager "dead-link" checker keeps me from losing sleep over the accuracy and availability of me links.

Nice point. Dead link checker and reciprocal link checker are worth their weight in gold.

I do not like the Linksmanager, I prefer to add links code to the pages on my one and then update it with FTP client. Somehow it saves me a whole bunch of time - but there are minuses as well: I will have to spend time setting another program to chack reciprocation status. So it depends...
