I have an online storefront with www.shopster.com . The URL is http://www.childrenscowboypoetry.secure2u.com/ . Can I swap links on this site? Or does the "secure2u" part mean no link trading here? If so, can I still have outbound links to sites listed here? Would that do me any good? Suggestions and advice please.

http://www.childrenscowboypoetry.secure2u.com
This URL does not belong to you.. it belongs to secure2u.com. You just have a subdomain there. If you spend a year promoting this url and then you change webhosts, you lose all of those efforts.
You can still use http://www.childrenscowboypoetry.secure2u.com (http://www.childrenscowboypoetry.secure2u.com/) but I would suggest your own domain which you would promote directly. You can link to http://www.childrenscowboypoetry.secure2u.com (http://www.childrenscowboypoetry.secure2u.com/) from your own domain to make sales but I would not suggest you waste any time promoting this domain because you dont own it. Domains are cheap.. as low as $8 so I would suggest you register your own domain and get your own website going and then promote your own home page domain.
A few quality webhosts we suggest include earthlink.net, verio.net, and ev1servers.net.
If you need help understanding this, feel free to call the LinksManager sales desk (http://linksmanager.com/contacts.html).

From the point of view of generating traffic from end users, it's always important to have link partners and anyone can link to your sub-domain site just as easily as to a real domain.
However, I think -- though I'm not sure and could be wrong -- some search engine bots including Google either ignore non-domains completely or downgrade them significantly. (MSN doesn't seem to.)
As I said, I might be wrong about that and I would appreciate anyone who knows putting up a comment, but I think the thing is that serious web merchants are expected to own their own domain name in the same way that Sears and MGM and even Google trademark and own their names.
